Cover Letter

The idea of writing a creative cover letter comes from the inspiration of my architecture knowledge that I will compare how to write an essay with how to build a house. Basically, I think the two subjects have many similarities. For example, an essay must have a thesis, which is the main part to build up the whole essay, the body paragraphs, which function as a frame of the structure to explain and support the thesis, and a conclusion, which sum up the essay and give sense of an end. Likewise, house also have the three important parts; there are a foundation functions as the foot of the house where it should be build, the main body of the house with frame and decoration functions as a structure to express all the living space and condition, and a roof  is symmetry with the foundation to give sense of where the house is finished.  I will try to insert it into a comic story theme to introduce what I have learned in this English 3 class.
Story theme:  Three students name Foundation, Wall, and Roof were wondering if they are able to take the English 3 course for the following school semester. Therefore, they went to ask House, who is the former student of Mrs. Building’s English 3 class, about his experiences.

Dr. Jekyll and the Change of What He Values in Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde

People, the human being with different aspects of life and living conditions that makes them value the different things; and the things that they values may change overtime depend on their desire. One may value education, career, and financial security during his young age, but may value health and respect when he gets older. In the novella, Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Robert Louis Stevenson described how Dr. Jekyll changed what he values through different stages that he ultimately ended in suicide when he values peaceful from his evil-self. In the story, Dr. Jekyll believed that human has two natures, the good and the evil; it led to his scientific experiment to bring out his evil nature. He first enjoyed how his miracle experiment gave him different experiences of the other side of his nature, the dark side. However, by transforming to Mr. Hyde he had changed from valuing the social acceptance, respect, personal achievements to valuing freedom, power, and peace.

A lifetime achievement of knowledge and reputation of Dr. Jekyll shows that he valued achievement, respect, and social acceptance. According to the novel, Henry Jekyll was a wealthy upper class man in the late 1800s in London; he achieved many titles in his career such as M.D., D.C.L., L.L.D., F.R.S., that bring his highly reputation and respect from his fellows ( 12-13). This suggests that he devoted his whole life to gain a good reputation based on his knowledge. He was a man who wants to achieve great quantities of award from society and wanted other people to respect him as he described himself as a man “fond of the respect of the wise and good among his fellow-men”( Sanford, 29). Dr. Jekyll was described as “a large, well-made, smooth-faced man of fifty, with something of a stylish cast perhaps, but every mark of capacity and kindness” (19). He appeared so good in the public opinion of a man of all good from physically to mentally. He had formed a high rank in the social for what he has done in the pass because reputation is very important during the Victorian Era, “A reputation for bad manners, immorality or lax character, or a poor work ethic at your employer would slam shut the doors of both society and business” (Brett & Kate McKay). However, a life time of built-up was destroyed when Dr. Jekyll decided to bring out his evil nature, Mr. Hyde.

The appearance of Mr. Hyde suggests that Dr. Jekyll has changed his value from respect to independence and freedom. During the Victorian Era, there were three main classes, which the men in upper class appear to be gentle by following many social rules. Dr. Jekyll said, “But such as I found hard to reconcile with my imperious desire to carry my head high, and wear a more than commonly grave countenance before the public” (48). He was tired of maintaining a good reputation, so since he knows that there was other evil side of him, he despite the risk of failure experiment to bring out his evil-self. He was so excited when he transformed to a wild and young Hyde with full of energy and pure evil, “very novelty, incredibly sweet,” “I felt younger, lighter, happier in body” “alone in the rank of mankind, was pure evil (50-51). He liked the Hyde evil personality, “I think I was glad to know it; I think I was terrors of the scaffold,” because Hyde gave him a chance to live freely from the law of society that he would never have done with Jekyll. He said, “Men have before hired bravos to transact their crimes, which their own person and reputation sat under shelter” (52). He was happy about his new body as well as the pure evil of Hyde.  He could do whatever he wanted with Hyde and take no responsibility as Jekyll “It was Hyde, after all, and Hyde alone, that was guilty” (53). As being force to live in the high class reputation of the society that gave too much pressure on him, and Hyde was the solution for him to become freedom from the entire rules that he had been followed. “Edward Hyde would pass away like the stain of breath upon a mirror; and there in his stead, quietly at home, trimming the midnight lamp in his study, a man who could laugh at suspicion, would be Henry Jekyll” (53). Being able to live freedom from the society with all the evil things he could do with Hyde was the great experiences for Jekyll that make him feel so excited about. However, the feeling of excitement for freedom didn’t last so long in him since he realized that Hyde was appear event he didn’t take the drug by conscious, “Yes, I had gone to bed as Henry Jekyll, I had awakened Edward Hyde. How was this explained?” He aware of the danger of Hyde evil, but he didn’t want to stop his evil nature instead of empower himself to control it.

Dr. Jekyll changed to value the power of controlling his evil nature. He didn’t really want Hyde to disappear completely, but he knew that Hyde was out of his control. So, he tried to control Hyde by doing good things again.  According to John A. Sanford, Dr. Jekyll renewed his old life, becomes more dedicated than ever to doing good works, and also, for the first time, become devoted to religion as well. (31) The fact that Jekyll renewed himself was not to avoid Hyde, but he want to empower his spirit to fight against his evil. He would like to be able to control Hyde and make him appear whenever he wanted. He said, “Yes, I preferred the elderly and discontented doctor, surrounded by friends and cherishing honest hopes; and bade a resolute farewell to the liberty, the comparative youth, the light step, leaping pulses and secret pleasures, that I had enjoyed in the disguise of Hyde”(55). This showed that he knew that Hyde was evil and may take control over his origin, but he didn’t want to give up the dark side of him since it profited him with many good thing as Jekyll would never had done it. On one hand, he fear the evil of Hyde and the power of Hyde growing stronger over time demanding taking control of the body “ Hyde struggling after freedom”, on the other hand, he liked how he felt when become Hyde  with all the freedom and energy he earned.

However, at the end, when he knew that there was no chance for him to control Hyde and continue to live his life with both good and evil, he chose to escape from Hyde by killing himself with the hope that Hyde would never be able appear. It showed that he valued peace. He didn’t want to deal with all the pain from the body and the conflict with his evil personality that he said, “ I became , in my own person, a creature eaten up and emptied by fever, languidly weak both in body and mind, and solely occupied by one thought: the horror of my other self” (60). Being unable to control himself, “there come an end to all thing; the most capacious measure is filled at last; and this brief condescension to my evil finally destroyed the balance of my soul,” Jekyll decided to end his experience and bring back the peace for himself, “ I bring the life of that unhappy Henry Jekyll to an end” (58). He didn’t want Hyde to be outrage and dominate his body and all his works; “ Hence the apelike tricks that he would play me, scrawling in my own hand blasphemies on the pages of my books, burning the letters and destroying the portrait of my father ... to involve me in the ruin. He feared the evil of Hyde. He feared the power of Hyde tanking control of him; “ this, then, is the last time, short of miracle, that Henry Jekyll can think his own thoughts or see his own face”(61). He wanted peace at last when he knew that there was no other way that Hyde would disappear from his life;“I know how he fears my power to cut him off by suicide, I find it in my heart to pity him” (61). He chose to end his life with all the goodness that he had spent life time to achieve to escape from his evil nature that he first wanted to bring it out.

In conclusion, Henry Jekyll didn’t fault to bring out his evil nature because that was what he valued for his scientific experiment. He desired to do the thing that he wanted to do and he had done it. I think he was brave to challenge himself. He knew what he was doing and at last he was taking responsible for that. He happy for the first time that he was able to meet his evil shadow and the freedom of doing thing that only evil-self could do, but he was fear that his shadow overpowered and took control of him. He empowered himself to gain control and defined the position of origin, but he struggle with the powerful evil shadow of him that he decided to end his life one and for all. As we can see, he changed from valuing respect, social acceptance, and knowledge to freedom, power, and lastly peace. It suggested that people’s desires never end. Even as a high social position likes Jekyll, it is still not an exception. Human changes from time to time no matter what situation or position they are, for better, or for worse.

IM: The Best Personal and Professional Communications Application

Instant messaging changes and aids the way people communicate. Face-to-face communication wasn’t possible for long distance communication until the invention of the internet combined with advanced technology and applications like instant messaging. This opens a new age for international business and e-commerce because it allows people to interact face-to-face without physically being at the same location. Cyber market staffs can serve customers directly and instantly by providing links to specific pages upon requests and instantly assist as well as answer questions. People, who live in different countries for many reasons, don’t have to suffer homesickness or worry about their family because instant messaging makes it possible for them to see each other with the click of a mouse. Therefore, although instant messaging makes people less physically interactive and can be a distraction at work, it is necessary for our society because it provides instant long-distance face-to-face communication, real time conversation without physical interaction, and a valuable tool for business.

First of all, instant messaging such as, Yahoo, Skype, and Google Talk help maintain long-distance relationships. Long distance relationships were hard to maintain about 10 years ago, but today, they are much easier to maintain with great communication technology like instant messaging. In the article, “Making Long-Distance Relationship Work,” Jocelyn Voo said, “Indeed, modern technology like instant messaging and webcams are granting long-distance lovers some semblance of immediate and face-to-face contact.” Instant messaging provides users with amazing webcam quality, file transfer, texting, and voice control. It makes face-to-face communication possible with real-time webcam and voice. It is definitely helpful when physical interaction is impossible for two people with a distance of half the Earth away like me and my girlfriend. For example, I can see my girlfriend everyday by making a video call via Skype. I might sing a song or dance with music; she might be cooking or cleaning while I am doing my homework; I might brush my teeth in the morning while she is getting ready for bed; we might  eat together in front of the webcam and have fun, or we might even celebrate a birthday together. Instant messaging makes this all possible for us; it helps us do everything in real-time and face-to-face even though physical contact is limited.

Long-distance relationships are more and more common nowadays, and instant messaging is so important to those who have to live far away from their friends, families, and loved one. With the increase of foreign workers in many developed countries, the high demand of high-skilled workers, the increase of international students who seek higher education, and the drive of work forces in different states within the US, instant messaging has become one of the best ways for people to maintain their relationships. There are many examples of these types of long-distance relationship. Susanne Phillips, a psychologist, described some in her article, “Love in Long-Distance Relationship,” “here are 48,000 US troops in Iraq and 94,000 US troops in Afghanistan. That leaves a lot of Home Fires burning. There are folks like the man I met on a plane who couldn’t retire or sell his house as planned, so he spends half the week in Phoenix and half with his wife in Florida. There are those caught in the cycle of visa regulations; those who need medical treatment far from home; and those who stay in different places to accommodate children’s school calendars.” Nowadays, life is much different than it was in the pass that requires people to move around for many reasons, so online communication become popular and necessary to maintain their relationships with other people at the different locations. What is the most important thing on Earth if you don’t know what is going on with your loved one in half the Earth away? Email takes a long time to reply to with no guarantee of a specific reply time, and a phone call can’t give the speaker an emotional experience. Instant messaging with real-time webcam and high quality voice call make it possible to fulfill the need of those who seek a solution to solve the long-distance relationship problem. Instant messaging is so powerful that it shifts the ways we communicate and helps hundreds of millions of users with their online relationships.

Furthermore, instant messaging has become a great ways to communicate with other people because it provides a lot of features for fast communication, such as chatting, web-links, video, images, sounds, files, and streaming content. It is more than just enough functions for everyone who seeks a fast and reliable way to communicate. In the article, “How Instant Messaging Works,” Jeff Tyson and Alison Cooper said instant messaging has become popular over traditional ways of communication like letter mail, email, and phone. They also say that email was popular several years ago, but is now being pulled back because it requires more steps and longer waiting time. The traditional phone, which can’t transfer data, also has many limitations. It is obvious that instant messaging is a more efficient way of communicating nowadays for our busy schedules because everyone does things “on the go.” For example, students in college can transfer files of works or report with other peers, get instant replies on the go, and stream content of news and quotes. Moreover, by providing a chat-room feature, people around the world have the chance to make worldwide friendships to help them learn more about different cultures and see life in different places. Instant messaging has taken our daily communication to a next level that wasn’t possible before. Imagine that you wake up in the morning and have a cup of coffee while talking face-to-face with your friends on the other half of the planet where they are having BBQ in the back yard. Communication has no limit nowadays with all the amazing functions that instant messaging can provide. It even breaks through the limits of personal communicating to become the most reliable way for professional communication.

Instant messaging helps serve customers better for e-commerce websites with real-time and direct service. In the article, “Is Instant Messaging Good for E-commerce?” Barry Nance said, “But IM can be a valuable business tool, especially in e-commerce. In fact, for a Web-based e-commerce environment, IM may be the best and most natural way for a company to provide direct, real-time service to a site visitor who has a question, is lost or has special needs. It adds a flexible, comforting human touch to an otherwise automated process.” The best way for customer service several decades ago was a phone call, but with the invention of advanced technology, combined with the habit of customers and self-services, instant messaging has become one of the most reliable ways of getting immediate service. Customers don’t have to be put on hold for 30 minutes for a single question, and it is not awkward when customers don’t have much knowledge about the subject. This is especially true in banking and investment service. With instant messaging, customers get a real-time response from the company’s representative with a link to specific web pages, answers to frequently asked questions, and step-by-step assistance through the whole process. It’s so much easier to get in touch with a representative since one representative can assist many customers at the same time. Furthermore, with advanced instant messaging, it is not simply sending texts and links, but customers can also talk with a representative via voice chat. I personally got lost in the process of registering a DSL service with Verizon myself. I asked so many questions regarding the different DSL services packages, FIOS service, and so on. The Verizon representative answered those questions very fast because all they needed to do was just read my questions, drag the answers from the catalogue, drop them into the chat-box, and hit enter. They guided me step-by-step with the links to specific web pages I needed until I finished registering. The benefit of instant messaging is that it not only serves between the employee and customers, but also a company’s work communication.

Lastly, instant messaging allows workers to interact with each other while they are working within the company area or at a different location. The term collaboration in this new technological age is not limited by physical collaboration anymore because with instant messaging people can collaborate everywhere they want to with their peers. In the article, “Instant Messaging for Business,” Roger Gann said, “IT managers have recognized IM's potential for rapid communication and ability to create ad hoc discussions between employees and external partners. But instant messaging becomes an even more powerful collaborative tool when combined with features like document sharing, white-boarding, and graphics.” Sharing a document within a company is very essential for many types of jobs that require group work, such as, sales person, architect, and businessman. Document sharing and white-boarding are effective tools for workers to manage and work together within their own group, manager, and client. For example, Jeff, the studio editor of TVBS, the television company where I work, uses instant messaging to communicate with his client for the ongoing commercial program. He and his client usually send back and forth a commercial clip for editing process before airing. Lastly, instant messaging can serve as an online conference for workers, who work in different locations, with audio and webcam. People don’t have to be face-to-face for a meeting at the same location because with technology, combined with instant messaging; they can do it at home or anywhere.

In conclusion, instant messaging is the solution for our future communication that allows people to get instant, real-time face-to-face communication with not only texting, audio, and webcam, but also file sharing, picture sharing, and video streaming. Instant messaging provides a great and flexible way for people to get in touch anywhere on earth; furthermore, it becomes the most powerful tool for businesses to manage and work within the company, as well as to serve online customers. Phone and email have yielded their number one place of communication to the brilliant instant messaging that can do both of their jobs and even more. Instant messaging for both personal and professional use is cheap or even free depending on the user’s desire. Distractions and limitations of physical interaction may seem a problem for people when they use instant messaging uncontrolled. But, in fact, this is a minor problem due to the bad behavior of the users that we should be conscious of how we use it. The potential of instant messaging doesn’t only stop at this point; it will be more advanced in the future since it works well with most of the technology devices. Instant messaging will dominate the world of communication and benefit everyone with great experience in both personal and professional life.
